A Jogger VS All-Terrain

What is the difference between a jogger and an all terrain stroller? Nothing, nowadays. It used to be that a jogger had a large fixed front wheel, but over the years, a jogging stroller can either have a swivel wheel that can lock straight when you need it to, or the stroller has the large fixed front wheel. The large fixed front wheel type of stroller isn't so popular any more. Strollers designed for jogging will often have a slowing brake on the handle for better control going down hills, for example, and many high-end all terrain strollers sport that feature now.

While fixed-wheel jogging strollers are perfect for running, they are not always the best for maneuvering because they don't go around corners very well. But an all terrain's front wheel swivels right around those corners and can also be locked into place and used for jogging. I like that versatility, don't you? However, some all-terrains are not the best for running because the wheel may still wobble back and forth at higher speeds, though the quality is improving and you're not as likely to get that problem anymore.

Why choose an all-terrain stroller?

When most people think of a three-wheeler, they think of outdoorsy parents. Right? But all kinds of parents enjoy this type of stroller. They are not just for walkers or joggers anymore. Some choose an all terrain not only for their sporty look, but for going to outdoor places like the beach and park trails, as well as the fair, amusement parks and the zoo. They also go smoothly over rough sidewalks and an uneven ground and for this, rural families like all-terrains.

Even though an all-terrain is rugged, its sleek form and swivel front tire fit through tight aisles and doorways. Some accommodate infant car seats, so your newborn has a travel system. The strong and durable build holds up to lots of different kinds of terrain and long-lasting life.

Price range

The variety of sporty, stylish colors and brands is continually growing, but generally speaking, all terrain strollers are either budget friendly or very expensive. The best all terrain strollers cost upwards of $350, and some reach over $700 by the time you add accessories. But parents who purchase the higher-end products feel good about the value and performance. You will also likely get a good resale price if you sell it later on.

On more of a budget? You can still get a quality all terrain stroller for under $200, and you will see some popular items with high quality ratings in that section. As of this writing, there are only a couple of mid-range brands between $200-$400, but the selection is growing.

These super-star jogging strollers are like high-tech mountain bikes; they are precision machines that safely take your baby over all types of terrain with ease and comfort. Whether you are a serious athlete with rigorous training, or you jog casually, but want the highest quality standards, the sport strollers below are sure to please. All these strollers have a locking front swivel wheel. If you want a fixed wheel jogger, look here.

High end all terrain stroller brands are generally over $350 and go up to about $500.These products are the most popular in this category. Check them out!

Weighing only 23 pounds, the Bob Revolution stroller is lightweight, folds up easily and storage is a snap. Built with a superb suspension system, your Revolution goes over the toughest terrain with ease and agility. Many have compared BOB strollers to mountain bikes for the precision suspension, tires and rugged frame.

The ultra-padded multi-position reclining seat goes back up to 70 degrees for a comfortable position and the adjustable handle is comfortable for tall parents.

Customer reviews give it excellent 4½-star ratings. Read my surprising BOB Revolution review to find out why.

Mountain Buggy Terrain

Mountain Buggy Terrain Premium Jogging Stroller, Solus
  • THREE POSITION SWIVEL LOCK FRONT WHEEL - Provides maximum control and maximum performance on any terrain while walking or jogging. Swivel, lock forwards, lock backwards or adjust the "play"...
  • ONE-HAND CONTROL SQUEEZE BRAKE - for hilly adventures and rough terrain;SHOCK ABSORBING SUSPENSION - a smooth push for mom and dad and a smooth ride for your baby
  • NEWBORN READY IN THREE MODES - Newborn perfect reclinable seat, compatible with the Mountain Buggy Carry Cot+ in matching fabric (sold separately) and infant car seats from most major brands...

You're a person who runs or jogs and you'd love a jogging stroller, but you don't want to give up the maneuverability that an all-terrain has. You want a transitional product that takes you from workouts to errands. You want the Mountain Buggy Terrain.

Terrain has signature features of a performance jogger such as 16-inch rear tires that pop off for more compact storage. A slowing hand brake on the handle bar is a standard safety feature must-have.

The shock-absorbing suspension system smooths out the ride. The front wheel has a 3-way lock: Lock it forward during your run for extra stability, lock it backward for stability over terrain, and let it loose and swivel for maneuvering.

Other features include an adjustable height handle bar for your comfort and a zip-close storage basket so your stuff doesn't go flying when you hit a bump during your workout. An enormous canopy with flip-out visor follows sun at any angle to shield your child. The seat holds up to 55 pounds but also accommodates newborns.

For your newborn, the seat zips right off and you attach a car seat with an adapter right to the frame or use a carrycot as a pram. The Terrain is also compatible with the Face to Face seat, a parent-facing seat you can get for those in-between months before baby is ready to sit outward.

Parents recommend the Mountain Buggy Terrain and give it 4-star reviews for the performance and adjustable height handle.

Mid-Range All Terrain Strollers

In the mid range category, all-terrain strollers have excellent suspension systems. The design is updated every few years with many brands, and contemporary fabrics and colors compliment each other. Here you may or may not get a child's snack tray, but often times, if you don't get a tray you may get a bumper bar or little pocket for your child's sippy cup or bottle.

The most common compliments for a mid range all terrain stroller are the smooth suspension system, easy maneuvering, and large sun canopies. While these strollers are heavier than the high end brands, they are not monsters. But just about any all terrain stroller is going to be heavier and bulkier unless you pay the big bucks.

BOB Rambler

BOB Rambler Jogging Stroller, Black
  • Locking swivel-front wheel for stability when jogging and easy mobility while on the go in the city
  • 12" air-filled tires and mountain bike-style suspension system offers an ultra-smooth ride, while the one-step foot-activated parking brake secures the back wheels at a stop
  • No rethreading, ever: No-rethread harness and one-hand near-flat recline allows for easy adjustments

Are the phenomenal BOB strollers a little out of your budget? BOB has thought of you when they released the new Rambler.

The BOB Rambler is a simplified version of the super-popular BOB Revolution Flex. While still packed with fantastic features, the Rambler does not have the adjustable height handle; it's at 39 inches high. The second difference is that it has three 12-inch air-filled tires instead of the Revolution Flex's 16-inch rear tires. Those are the only two main differences, and you get this stroller for much less!

Weighing just over 25 pounds, the BOB Rambler stroller is lightweight, folds up easily and storage is a snap. Built with a superb suspension system, your Rambler goes over the toughest terrain with ease and agility. Many have compared BOB strollers to mountain bikes for the precision suspension, tires and rugged frame.

If you have a newborn, the Rambler takes the BOB infant car seat by Britax or other major brand car seat with adapters sold separately, for a convenient travel system. The ultra-padded multi-position reclining seat has a deep recline and also sits up straight so your passenger can take part in your adventures. You'll appreciate the full-coverage UPF 50+ canopy and generous storage basket. The fold and unfold is easy peasy.

Customer reviews so far are rating it between 3½-5 stars for an average 4-star review. They like the roomy, comfortable seat, the smooth ride and excellent maneuverability.

Read Review

Weighing only 27 pounds, the Activ3 accommodates your child from 6 months old up to 50 pounds. For newborns, attach a Chicco Keyfit car seat for your own travel system.

The handlebar has a lot going on around it. First, it is adjustable in 5 positions. Then you have a hand-controlled brake so as not to interrupt your stride. A hand-controlled switch flips the front swivel wheel into locked and unlocked positions.
