Christmas is a wonderful time of year, especially for those who have a family. And one of the most exciting festive activities that the whole family can get involved in is decorating the house for Christmas.
The festive season can be an expensive time of the year, and it’s easy to overspend, leaving yourself with a financial headache in the New Year. Even decorations for your tree can cost a small fortune.
Well, we’ve got the solution you’ve been waiting for!
Here’s a simple, fun project that everyone can be part of. You can make a beautiful, sparkling snowflake decoration for your Christmas tree that won’t cost you the earth. Even better, this is a project that’s really easy to do so that the kids can join in too!
So, let’s get to it!
Table of Contents
What you’ll need
- Two empty cardboard toilet rolls (or one empty cardboard kitchen roll cut in half)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Craft glue
- Glitter (you can use any color glitter you like)
- Silver thread
You can buy everything you need for this project from your local craft store or via the handy Amazon links we’ve provided for you above.
Step 1: Mark up the toilet roll
Begin by taking one of the toilet rolls and pressing it flat with the palm of your hand.
Now, take a ruler and mark each centimeter on the long edges of the toilet roll, using a pencil.
Next, make horizontal pencil lines across the toilet roll to join the centimeter marks together.
Step 2: Cut the toilet roll
Now, take your scissors and cut the toilet roll into strips along the pencil lines you have drawn.
Step 3: Create the basic flower
Take your glue gun and apply a small dab of glue to one side of the end of one of the cut pieces of toilet roll.
Stick a second piece of cut toilet roll to the first piece. Now repeat the process until you have six pieces of cut toilet roll stuck together. You should now have a flower-shaped structure that forms the basis of your decoration.
Step 4: Make extra petals
Now take another piece of cut toilet roll and fold it in half so that it resembles a rabbit’s ears. Apply a dab of hot glue to both sides of the folded edge of the cardboard.
Insert the folded piece of cardboard between the petals of your flower shape so that it sticks into place. Repeat the process, sliding another folded piece of cardboard inside the piece you just stuck.
Continue to work around the whole piece until all the cardboard petals have been positioned, and you will have an attractive design that looks just like a flower.
Step 5: Apply glitter
Now, take your craft glue and brush and apply an even layer of glue all over the cut edges of the flower.
Pour your glitter onto a piece of card or paper and carefully dip the flower into the glitter so that it sticks to all the edges.
Shake off any excess glitter.
Step 6: Finishing touches
Finally, take a piece of silver thread and tie it to the top of your decoration so that you can hang your finished ornament on your Christmas tree.
And you’re done!
In a matter of 20 minutes, you can create this eye-catching, sparkly decoration that is sure to add some Christmas magic to your home this Holiday.
