Before anything else, make sure to set the oven at 350°F (175°C). While the oven heats, grease two 8-inch round pans.
According to instructions on the box, mix together the cake batters. Instead of water, use milk and make the oil adjustments mentioned above. Split the mixture evenly among the different pans.
Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool completely on wire racks.
Level the cakes and stack with a thin layer of buttercream in between.
Create a crescent-shaped cavity and save the crumbs for the edges.
To dye rock candy crystals, mix a few drops of food gel coloring and a small amount of clear alcohol or light corn syrup with the crystals and then shake to combine. After shaking, allow crystals to dry completely.
To resemble crystals, pack the cavity with dyed rock candy.
Crumb coat the cake, chill it for 20 minutes, then add a final layer of smooth buttercream.
Dust the inner crystal edges with edible silver and a bit of glitter.
Store chilled until 30 minutes before serving.
