15) Basketball-shaped reveal cake (neutral exterior)

Servings: 12 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup hot water
  • Orange fondant for exterior
  • Black fondant or piping gel for lines
  • 1 cup buttercream frosting colored pink or blue for the center

Method

  1. Set the oven to 350_F. Prepare two 8 inch round pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. Whisk dry ingredients in a bowl.
  3. In a different bowl, mix the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients then add hot water and stir until the mixture is smooth.
  5. Separate the batter so that equal amounts go into each of the pans. Bake for 30 to 33 minutes, then check with a toothpick.
  6. Cool for 10 minutes, then remove and let cool completely on racks.
  7. Level the cakes and divide each one into two layers so that you will have four layers in total.
  8. Stack with a ring of buttercream on the edges and pink/blue buttercream in the center so that the color is hidden.
  9. Place the stacked cake in the fridge for 30 minutes so it can set.
  10. Using piping gel or fondant, add the black lines that are used to separate the orange fondant top cake into sections like the seams of a basketball and make it look like a basketball.
