Swedish Meatballs with Creamy Gravy

These are serious comfort food in tiny form, and everyone from toddlers to grandparents will eat them happily. The creamy sauce is what makes them special — don't skip it. Keep them warm in a chafing dish or slow cooker the whole party.

Ingredients
  

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 0.5 lbs ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp flour

Method
 

  1. Soak breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes, then combine with beef, pork, egg, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.
  2. Roll into small 1-inch balls.
  3. Brown meatballs in batches in butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat, about 4 minutes per batch; set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, whisk flour into the drippings, then slowly add beef broth, whisking constantly.
  5. Add heavy cream and simmer 3-4 minutes until thickened.
  6. Return meatballs to the pan and simmer in the gravy for 5 minutes.
  7. Transfer to a serving dish or slow cooker set to warm.
