Southern Apple Cobbler

Ingredients
  

  • 6 cups apples peeled and sliced (about 6 medium apples)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar divided
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons cold butter cut into small pieces
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Pour melted butter into a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, toss sliced apples with 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together flour, remaining 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in milk until just combined to form a batter.
  4. Pour batter over the melted butter in the baking dish. Do not stir.
  5. Spoon the apple mixture evenly over the batter. Dot with pieces of cold butter.
  6. Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the crust comes out clean.
  7. Allow to cool for 10-15 minutes before serving warm.
