Pfeffernüsse

Pfeffernüsse is a German spice cookie featuring a kick from black pepper and a sugar glaze coating.

Ingredients
  

  • 0.5 cup molasses
  • 0.25 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp ground black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp ground cloves
  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar for glaze

Method
 

  1. Warm the molasses and butter together, then let it cool slightly.
  2. Beat in the egg, then stir in the flour, cinnamon, pepper, and cloves.
  3. Chill the dough for 1 hour.
  4. Roll into small balls and bake on lined sheets at 350F for 10 to 12 minutes.
  5. Whisk the powdered sugar with a little water into a glaze.
  6. Dip the warm cookies in glaze and let them dry on a rack.

Notes

The black pepper is what makes them authentic, so don't skip it.
