In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest.
Cut in cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in cranberries.
In a separate bowl, whisk together ¾ cup cream, egg, and vanilla extract.
Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Don't overmix!
Turn dough onto a floured surface and gently pat into an 8-inch circle about 1 inch thick. Cut into 8 wedges.
Place wedges on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight (or up to 24 hours).
Christmas morning, preheat oven to 400°F. Brush scones with remaining cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
