Cranberry Orange Scones

Scones sound hard but they're actually super forgiving — the key is just not overworking the dough. These have a festive cranberry and orange thing going on that feels very New Year's. Serve them with clotted cream or just butter.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cut into cubes
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream plus more for brushing
  • 1 large egg
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp fresh orange juice

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold butter with a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture looks like rough crumbs.
  3. Stir in cream, egg, orange zest, and cranberries until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn dough onto a floured surface and press into a 1-inch thick disk. Cut into 8 wedges.
  5. Brush tops with cream. Bake for 16 to 18 minutes until golden.
  6. Whisk powdered sugar and orange juice into a glaze and drizzle over cooled scones.
