In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pot.
Add the diced onion to the bacon drippings and sauté until softened and translucent, about 4-5 minutes.
Add the green beans, chicken broth, salt, pepper, and garlic powder to the pot. Stir to combine and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the green beans are very tender. Stir in the reserved bacon before serving.
