Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 4 black tea bags
  • 4 whole green cardamom pods crushed
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger grated
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons honey or sugar or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, bring the water to a boil and add the crushed cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, and grated ginger.
  2. Reduce heat to medium-low and let the spices simmer for 5 minutes to release their flavors.
  3. Add the black tea bags to the spiced water and steep for 3-4 minutes, then remove and discard the tea bags.
  4. Pour in the milk and add honey or sugar to taste, stirring to combine.
  5. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it's steaming hot but not boiling, about 3-4 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, then strain the chai through a fine-mesh strainer into mugs.
  7. Serve hot, optionally topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a dollop of frothed milk.
