Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 0.75 cup light corn syrup
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 1 tsp anise extract
  • 0.5 tsp red food coloring
  • 0.25 cup powdered sugar for dusting

Method

  1. Butter a baking sheet and dust with powdered sugar.
  2. Cook sugar, corn syrup, and water to 300F (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer.
  3. Remove from heat and quickly stir in the anise extract and food coloring.
  4. Pour onto the prepared sheet and let cool until fully hardened.
  5. Crack into shards and toss in powdered sugar to keep them from sticking.

Notes

Add the extract off the heat so the flavor doesn't cook away.
