5) Apple-Caramel Streusel French Toast Casserole

This is the one I pull out for holiday brunch when I want people to think I tried harder than I did. Warm apples, crunchy pecan streusel, and caramel drizzled twice — once before baking, once right before serving. It looks like a lot of effort. It really isn't.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 loaf challah or brioche cubed (10–12 oz)
  • 3 cups peeled sliced apples (about 3 apples)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup streusel: 1/2 cup flour 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup cold butter, 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce store-bought or homemade

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13 pan.
  2. Toss bread and apples in the pan.
  3. Whisk eggs, milk, cream, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Pour custard evenly over bread and apples.
  5. Mix streusel ingredients until crumbly and sprinkle on top.
  6. Drizzle half the caramel over the casserole.
  7. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes until set and golden.
  8. Warm remaining caramel and drizzle before serving.
