Servings: 12 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 boxed chocolate cake mixes or 6 cups batter total
  • 1 cup milk
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 cups black buttercream store-bought tinted or homemade
  • 2 –3 tsp neon food gel blue, green, purple
  • 2 tbsp edible luster dust white/silver
  • 1/4 cup white royal icing for stars
  • Small glow-in-the-dark food-safe gel drops follow package amount

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease two 9-inch round pans and line bottoms with parchment.
  2. Mix cake batter per boxed directions, using milk, eggs, and oil. Divide evenly into pans.
  3. Bake 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool 15 minutes in pans, then on a rack.
  4. Make black buttercream by tinting 4 cups with black gel. Stir in luster dust for sparkle.
  5. Stack cakes with a thin layer of buttercream between. Coat whole cake in an even crumb coat. Chill 20 minutes.
  6. Finish with final black coat. Thin small amounts of neon gels with a tiny bit of clear alcohol and splatter for galaxy streaks.
  7. Pipe small stars with royal icing. Add glow drops per package directions and test under a black light.
